Apprentice Plastic Machining and Fabrication Engineer

York Plastics:

York Plastics is a family owned and run business based in Malton dated back around 60 years, specialising in machining and fabrication using plastic materials. 

Their core business is specialist model making to the packaging and product industries, particularly in acrylic. York Plastics also manufacture accurate, details hydraulic models in clear acrylic which are used for flow analysis work, medical and scientific research equipment, bespoke POS items, museum stands and cases, display items, interactive educational pieces and all other low volume turned, milled and fabricated parts and assemblies.

Job Description:

Day to day duties will include:

  • To complete a programme of training comprising of modules at DTA and on the job training at York Plastics leading to recognised qualification
  • To ensure all training work and logbooks are kept up to date and liaise with the works manager with regard to training issues
  • To become proficient in the application and use of plastic forming machinery including, but not restricted to, laser cutting equipment, plastic warming oven, vacuum forming maching, line bending equipment and plastic welding and jointing equipment
  • Fitting, manufacturing and assembly skills including the use of hand tools and marking out
  • Choice and application of assembly techniques including plastic welding, mechanical fasteners and glues/solvents
  • Measurement and inspection techniques using a variety of metrology equipment
  • Training in the use of CAD and CAM using a variety of different software packages
  • Carrying out additional tasks / duties as may be assigned from time to time by the works manager commensurate with your skills and abilities
  • To work with increasing independence as the apprenticeship progresses
  • To take reasonable care of own and others safety, to cooperate with works manager in complying with statutory health and safety duties and to report incidents, accidents and faults
  • Receiving deliveries associated with the workshop, including the unloading of vehicles
  • Maintaining the cleanliness and tidiness of the workshop area and stores. 

Qualifications Required:

We recommend all candidates have a minimum of 5 GCSE's (A*-C / 9-4) in Maths, English and Science or equivalent.

  • To work to your own initiative
  • To work as part of a team
  • To be able to meet deadlines

Skills Required:

  • Good communication skills
  • You must be able to follow instructions with a methodical approach

Qualifications Gained(upon completion):

Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering
